Founding Father and the first president of the United States, George Washington (1732 – 1799) was a fan of hemp’s potential as a cash crop. Noting its popularity as an industrial tool because it was so versatile and its fibers and oil were used to manufacture anything and everything from rope to linen, varnishes, paints, canvas sails, and more, Washington farmed hemp.

Although Washington’s crops couldn’t actually produce any type of “high” and he didn’t grow it for recreational purposes, it’s still fun to think about the first president of the U.S. being a supporter of cannabis and recognizing its usefulness.
